Happy world meat free day!
Since September 2015, I was having major feelings in regards to my diet, which led me to the decision of vegetarianism.
Over the past few years social media has exploded with veganism and vegetarianism movements, which is why I had never really considered it as many people could have assumed I was simply following the crowd and jumping on board with this “fad” – however that is not the case. I used to enjoy the taste of meat; I was raised in a meat-eating household so no one forced being a vegetarian onto me. Personally, it was never to do with the treatment of animals (it is now!), but instead it was a health choice

I used to buy free-range eggs and meat so I never felt as strongly over the animal’s treatment, but my body was rejecting the meat so I decided to cut it out. For the months leading up to my change I would feel sick whenever I ate meat, my body would feel sluggish and bloated the majority of the time. It’s not something I want to repeat.
Although I know I can eat healthily on meat, I feel a whole lot better for cutting it out. By removing it I’m now eating more vegetables (which is a great thing for my immune system) and have become more adventurous with my food. For instance, the other day I made a delicious vegetarian homemade pizza, and butternut squash soup. I’ve never once debated being a pescaatarian simply because I can’t eat fish; my digestive system is sensitive to it. I was never a big fish eater before discovering this, so it’s no change to my diet.
I’m not writing this post to force people to see my way of life, I’m simply doing it to inform you that there is a way to eat healthily and still get all the nutrients you need without eating meat. I’ll admit that it’s easier to eat meat, and maybe one day I will again, but I don’t see that changing in the immediate future.
By switching I haven’t restricted my food intake in any way, if anything it’s increased. For a while I debated veganism but I love cheese too much for that. I can be a fussy person when it comes to food, less so now I’m older, so for the past few months I’ve been relying on recipe books and blogs online to help me when I’m making a dish I’ve never tried before. Next up will be Millie Mackintosh’s corn fritters.
