Signs I need a Mental Health Break

It might not even occur to you that you need a mental break. If definitely never used to occur to me! I now think about how fast each day goes and wonder where what's actually happened. I often find myself stressed out from work, so if you do too please know you aren't alone.

Taking a mental health break can do so much to help restore your mind, body, and spirit. A mental health break can be different things - from deep breathing for 5mins, to yoga or meditation. Whatever a mental health break means to you, you and your body deserve one.

1. You have too much on your plate
This is a pretty obvious one, but how much is too much? If you've found yourself saying yes to requests from your boss, co-workers, family, or even friends has started to burn you out you're simply doing too much! One way to start giving yourself a break is by saying no to others and saying yes to yourself - something that I'm actively trying to remember 24/7.

2. You're experiencing physical side effects of stress
Everyone experiences stress in some form - you are not alone! But excessive stress can wreak havoc on your mind and body. I've learnt the hard way but I'm getting much better at noticing the signs.

You're prone to colds
Having a hard time getting out of bed
Experiencing a 'brain fog' and find it hard to focus
Prone to weight gain or weight loss

If you've found that you have any of the below, take a step back and write all the things that you think could be a trigger and how to prevent it from happening again.

3. The line between work and home is blurred
This is the one that I struggle with overcoming the most. I'm constantly 'switched on' and neglecting my own health and that of others. I need to learn to take as much responsibility as you can, not just where work is concerned, but where your work/life balance is concerned. It's definitely something you should consider too.

If you need to take a mental health break - as I'm currently doing whilst writing this - the key is to give the time completely to yourself. Put yourself in an environment that allows you to relax. Forget what’s been causing you stress, and don’t worry about the future. Do this every day and remind yourself that you are worth it!
