Being a good samaritan

Continuing on from my previous post, another step I have taken is choosing to volunteer at my local animal sanctuary.
Working with animals is something I have wanted to do since I was a child, but I never saw myself as a Vet. There’s no way I could handle having the power of life or death in my hands. Naturally, this led me to decide to volunteer.
Giving up my time to volunteer is something that means a lot to me. It’s made me begin to see myself as a good human being. Someone who is there for others, especially those that can’t ask for help. My whole life I’ve grown up around animals, and to me they offer so much to the world. From the way a dog has helped improve science, to how a bird helped deliver messages in times of need.
My time at the shelter isn’t pretty. I’m constantly cleaning up after the animals, but to see the joy on their faces as they get the human comfort they so desperately crave is an amazing thing. The shelter is explicitly clear on being a no kill shelter. Something that I have a lot of respect for. They have exceptions to this, as does any no kill shelter, but they are exceptions that I agree with. If any animal is severely ill or is consistently being aggressive towards humans, then the most humane thing to do is put it down.
Volunteering is something that I'm immensely proud of. It allows me to keep myself grounded, and it really helps when I'm having a bad day. If you don’t have the time to volunteer at a local charity, please do one good thing before the day is out and that’s donate. The smallest amount will go the longest way.
