10 Little Ways

Over the years, I have compiled a list of simple things to do which have a big impact on my mental health. Sometimes, it is not the grand gestures which work. You do not need to quit your job, go on a silent meditation retreat or move countries to feel better (although those are all cool things to do.) Making the effort to look after yourself in subtle ways is so important.

However rough you feel, however hard life is, try incorporating one of these each day. Most only take a few minutes and your mind will thank you for it.

1. Make yourself breakfast every day
It doesn’t matter if it’s the same thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s a just piece of toast. You’ll feel better - trust me.

2. Wear comfy clothes
No good day in history took place in shoes that were giving you blisters and trousers that were too small.

3. Do not underestimate the power of momentum.
Solve one small problem, pay a bill, make an appointment. Once you’ve started, you’ll want to keep going.

4. Figure a little something out about yourself.
A new food you like, a habit you have but don’t realize. Half the comfort is just in knowing.

5. Tell the truth and own your mistakes.
Making mistakes is part of life, it’s what makes us human. No one is perfect and owning your mistakes will get you a hell of a lot further than trying to cover up the truth. Trust me, I’ve learnt this the hard way.

6. Cook most of your meals for the week on Sunday.
You’ll thank yourself when you’re exhausted and don’t feel like making something during the week. It will also save you money on buying lunch at work.

7. Take a social media detox every once in awhile.
Social media is great but it’s also insanely draining. I’m guilty of not doing this enough but it’s definitely worth staying away for a weekend and clearing your head.

8. Declutter your life and your mind.
Write a to-do list, clean out your closet. Do whatever you need to in order to live a less stressed out life because the more stuff you have the more attached to it you become creating an even more chaotic life.

9. Invest in yourself.
Self-care is so important. I know it can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be. Paint your nails. Light a candle and take a bath. Do whatever you need to do in order to help feel better.

10. Learn when it’s time to let go.
There are a lot of things that change throughout life. Sometimes as much as you want to remain in someone’s life the best thing for you to do is appreciate the time you had together and move on. It’s easier said than done but it’s good to start practicing now.
