I consider myself a fairly healthy person. I exercise, I eat five fruit and vegetables every day. I even enjoy a packet of crisps (or two) as much as the next person.
Now I'm no doctor, and so my words don't substitute for a professional opinion. But if you feel you may be facing any health challenge, please be sure to visit a medical professional for expert guidance tailored just for you. When I learnt I had depression, it all clicked for me. I've learnt to overcome the diagnosis with three simple tips to helping me de-stress and step back.
1) Realise that what's happening on the outside, isn't what's happening inside.I was losing weight and at the time I thought it was due to my vegetarianism and workload of just completing a night shift so my sleeping / eating pattern was flipped. But I was also dealing with several personal challenges which left me drained. No matter how healthy you appear to be, please don't let yourself burn out. Nothing beats a regular checkup, and the sooner you know what's going on the sooner you can treat it.
2) Understand that you don't have to hold everything in.
When I receive bad news, I immediately want to talk it over with my friends or boyfriend. But busy schedules mean that sometimes it's easier for me to internalise it instead. I've found that arranging and taking time out to talk to someone in a safe manner, is a constructive way of moving forward.
If you aren't committed to speaking with someone in your personal life, there are plenty of other measures you can take that I urge you to try: local counselling centres offer walk-in hours, and local nonprofits may offer virtual and talk hotlines.
3) Make self-care your priority.
Living in a “fight or flight” can lead to many different affects on nearly every part of our body. Acne, migraines, and respiratory problems are just some of the ways our body bear stress. The good news is there are endless methods to help us win the battle: meditation, exercise, journals, a good night’s sleep, hobbies, and volunteering are just a few of the healthy, affordable acts we can use to find more peace within.
